About the event

EMBR, Langdale Three-hour endurance mountain bike challenge is a GPS event recorded using MapRun seven on your mobile phone.

This challenge can be carried out at any time of day and does not necessarily have to be carried out during an organised event. You can choose the time of day and year which you wish.  It does not necessarily have to be competitive but can be accomplished as an individual or group event.

The challenge is to visit as many pre-determined checkpoints as possible within three hours, cycling only on permitted tracks and bridal ways and returning to the start without obtaining late back penalty points.

Riding on footpaths is not permitted and is considered out of bounds.

The advantage you have over competitors taking part in the original event held on 17th July 2023 is you obtain a mapped copy of the checkpoints in advance allowing advance route planning,

To compete you will receive a printed map of the competition area showing 30 checkpoints valuing 30 to 10 points total of six hundred points available.

The choice of bike you wish to compete on is yours. Mountain bike and e-mountain bikes although some tracks are suitable for gravel bikes, please be advised that some areas and tracks on this map are unsuitable.

The start point for this challenge is to ride through the rugby goalposts to the north end of Ambleside Rugby Union Football Club. The finish is to ride to the rugby posts at the south end of the pitch.

You must remember while competing to honour the country code to close all gates be courteous to other country users and Leave no Trace

The entry fee is £10, which includes your day parking at Ambleside Rugby Union Football Club, free, bottled water and a free hot drink on your return assuming you return in opening hours the club cafe is open

You should have a mobile phone with the MapRun 7 app loaded and ensure you have sufficient battery power to last three hours. Should you run out of battery you will fail to record a finish which will result in being overtime allowed. should you not have a mobile phone a GPS mobile recording device can be hired from EMBR and Your points and time will be entered and assessed following your attempt.

in December 2024, the head of the leaderboard accumulating the most points from the challenge will be awarded the E MBR Langdale challenge trophy and will be entered as the 2024, champion in the Hall of Fame.

As an alternative to the three-hour challenge, we will host a leaderboard and trophy for the fastest time to complete all the checkpoints and return.
